LAND ROVER
Land rover is synonymous with luxury; a British car company started in the late 1940's Land Rover saw most of its early success building cars and parts for the British Military. Land rover was able to find a niche market and expand. The all out rugged almost safari look alike was their first vehicle in the works. Inspired by a World War 2 jeep, the first Land Rovers were available for loads of eager on lookers at the 1948 Automobile show in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Ten years later following the successful and profitable release of the first series Land Rover, the company set their sights on releasing the series 2 Land Rovers.
The vehicle only saw 2 years of production but sustained interests from its earliest customer base drove Land Rover's business to new heights. The series 1 and series 2 models had minor but major changes mainly with the engines. The 2.0 liter 72hp diesel Land Roverwas the first gen and the 2.25 liter 52hp petrol engine was next. The same diesel engine lasted several years due to its durability and is still in use in various countries throughout Europe. The Series 2 was capable of seating 10 or 12, most people preferred the cheaper 12 passenger due to its exemption from British Tax Laws. The 12-seater stood the test of time and was very popular till the late 1980's.
In 1983 Land Rover released the Defender previously called the Land Rover Ninety 110. The Sports Utility Vehicle did not raise eyebrows and soon faded away. The unimpressive engine and design of the vehicle was nothing special. Land Rover began improvising with different variations of the vehicle to try to boost sales and offer the same car with different specs. The engine was used in several different models of BMW cars at the time later becoming a more refined 4 cylinder and more ecofriendly.
In 1995 Land Rover released their first car available to be sold in the United States. More safety features and requirements to meet US motor vehicle regulations were put in place. The model was a 3.9 L V8 the new Discovery had a new 4.0 Liter V8 engine. A couple years later the car received minor changes to the headlamps and side paneling. The car was also 4x4 making it more compact and durable in all terrain conditions.
The Land Rover Discovery LR3 and LR4 followed and were minimally optimized with new transmission and minor exterior changes. The LR3 tested the waters releasing three different engines the earliest a 2.7 liter Turbo Diesel V6 next was 4.0L V6 and finally a 4.4L V8. The LR4 also released three different motors and the earliest was also a 2.7 L Turbo Diesel v6 next a 3.0 L Turbo Diesel V6 and a 5.0 L V8.
Land Rover had begun to take the reins of the luxury SUV automotive market with many of its customers boasting '' a house on wheels" and superior performance. This was a major boost and let other competitors know Land Rover was for real.
Range Rover Sport
When you think of a range rover sport many things may come to mind such as exceptional luxury and blazing performance. What comes to mind for me is one of the most brilliant cars ever made. The chassis has been adapted from the integrated body frame, semi-monocoque, independently suspended design which debuted on the Discovery 3 in 2004. This allegedly gives the Range Rover Sport the refinement and structural rigidity advantages of a monocoque chassis with the robustness of a separate chassis design for off-road applications. It also allows for less expensive manufacturing of the vehicles due to a large number of common components.
The range-topping Range Rover Sport is powered by a supercharged 4.2 liter all-aluminum Jaguar AJ-V8producing 390 hp (290 kW) and 550 N·m (410 lb·ft), making it the second most powerful vehicle in the company's history, second to the larger Range Rover Vogue .
A naturally aspirated 4.4 liter variant produces 300 hp (220 kW) and 425 N·m (313 lb·ft) and has been adapted by Land Rover with a slightly greater capacity and increased torque. Both petrol engines have been designed with a sump and oil pick-up system to allow for operation at extreme angles.
The advanced 2.7 liter turbo diesel TD V6 is an adaptation of the PSA/Ford development and produces 190 hp (140 kW) and 440 N·m (320 lb·ft) in Land Rover guise. It features a compacted graphite iron block and aluminum cylinder head with fast switching piezo crystal injectors.
This Range Roverengine is a further adaptation of the TDV6 but features a 90 degree block, twin variable geometry turbochargers and inlet valve deactivation... All engine variants are mated to an adaptive six-speed ZF automatic transmission with Command Shift which reacts and adapts to varying driving styles.
Command Shift gives the driver the freedom to sequentially manipulate gear changes. Which is a very clever adaptation from land rover.one of the range rover sports more unique features is its Terrain response system? Land Rover's patented Terrain Response system which debuted on the Discovery 3 is fitted as standard on all models.
Terrain Response allows the Range Rover driver to adjust chassis and transmission settings to suit the terrain being traversed. Five settings are available via a rotary knob on the center console. These include general driving; grass, gravel, snow; mud and ruts; sand; and rock crawl.
"Range Rover wheels are among the finest on the road today." --- Car and Driver
Suspension ride height, engine management, throttle mapping, transfer case ranges, transmission settings, electronic driving aids (such as electronic traction control (ETC),dynamic stability control (DSC) and hill descent control (HDC) and electronic e-diffs are all manipulated through the Terrain Response system. This model also comes with four unique options for Range Rover wheels.
All Range Rover Sports are equipped with a standard center e-diff from Magna Steyr Powertrain which electronically locks and unlocks and apportions torque via means of a multi-plate clutch pack located in the transfer case which also offers 'shift-on-the-move' dual-range operation. A rear e-diff is optional on all Range Rover Sport models and is able to lock and unlock instantaneously.
An in-dash display is available on all Ranger Rover models, which, among other things, is linked to Terrain Response and displays important off-road information such as the status of the e-diffs, the angle of the steering and wheel articulation. It is also able to inform the driver of wheels which do not have contact with the ground. Thus being said it is easy to conclude that the Range Rover Sport is one Brilliant piece of machinery
